Electrolytes for horses

Electrolytes for horses are needed during training and on hot days when the horse sweats. When a horse sweats, it loses not only water but also important electrolytes, which are minerals vital for maintaining proper electrolyte balance and normal body functions.

Electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium, play a crucial role in many processes in the body, including fluid balance, nerve impulses, muscle function, and acid-base balance. The rose hip powder in Electrolyte Booster adds flavor and contains antioxidants and vitamins like vitamin C & E, which are good for protecting cells, the immune system, and the skeleton.

When do horses need electrolytes? – Tips and Advice

Electrolytes are important for the horse’s body functions, especially during sweat loss. Here we go through when your horse needs electrolytes and how you can provide them in the best way.

When does my horse need electrolytes?

Electrolyte Booster can be given just before or after training sessions with sweat loss. It is also good for horses that sweat a lot due to high summer temperatures or fever.

Situations when electrolytes are needed:

- During training with high sweat loss

- During high outdoor temperatures

- During fatigue and exhaustion

- During sweating due to fever

- When the horse drinks little water

How to get the horse to eat electrolytes?

Electrolyte Booster contains rose hip powder that adds a pleasant flavor. For best effect, mix the electrolytes with the horse’s concentrate feed or mash. We recommend mixing with Höveler’s Pur.Mash, which is flavorful and can be mixed with water to create a thicker porridge or a more liquid consistency for extra fluid intake.

Tip: If the horse is not used to the salty taste, start with a smaller dose and gradually increase. Mix the powder in Pur.Mash just before feeding to also give your horse extra fluids.

How do electrolytes help the horse?

By providing the horse with electrolyte supplements after sweating, the electrolyte balance can be restored, ensuring that the horse gets the necessary minerals to maintain proper body function.

Electrolytes help to:

- Restore fluid balance in the body

- Facilitate fluid absorption

- Maintain normal electrolyte levels

Water and Salt – Important Components

It is important to remember that electrolyte supplements do not replace water intake. The horse must always have access to clean, fresh water.

Note: If you are also feeding salt, for example, fodder salt, review the total salt intake in the horse's diet to avoid imbalance.
